OCTOBER 11, 1926

The eleventh day of October in 1926 is a memorable date in the history of America. It is the day that a numerical designation was assigned to a Chicago-Los Angeles route and "The Mother Road" was born.
But the designation of Route 66 was not the only landmark happening on that date. The Gillioz Theatre opened that day and it opened on a section of Route 66 known as St. Louis Street in downtown Springfield, Missouri.

With 1130 seats, an orchestra pit, and the very latest in projection equipment, the Gillioz was the largest and finest theatre in Southwest Missouri. Originally designed for both stage shows and silent films, sound equipment was soon added to accommodate the new "talkies".

The Gillioz Theatre is conveniently located just east of the square in downtown Springfield at 325 Park Central East. Some of the destinations that are located within walking distance to the theatre include: Restaurants, clothing stores, antiques, flea markets, art galleries, jewelry stores, night clubs, hotels and Hammons Field, the home of the Springfield Cardinals. No cameras, video or audio recording devices, pagers, or cell phones are permitted during any Gillioz performance. Violators will be removed from theatre without refund.
